SD card recovery: reader quality and the "do not format" moment

When a camera card mounts with a format warning, the worst move is to let Windows or macOS "fix" the volume in place. That path often writes metadata or journal changes you do not want. Prefer attaching the card through a dedicated reader on a desktop, then let Recuva see the raw volume.

Cheap multi-slot hubs introduce voltage sag and disconnects mid-scan. If the scan halts or the drive letter vanishes, swap hardware before blaming the software. After recovery, copy files to a known-good disk and only then consider reformatting the card in-camera.

Label recovered folders with the shoot date and card serial if you have it. Photographers often run the same workflow twice; without labels, "CARD_COPY_3" in six months is useless. If the card was encrypted by the phone, desktop tools may see only an encrypted blob - decrypt or export on-device first when the vendor allows it.
