Recuva interface on Windows

SSDs, TRIM, and realistic expectations for undelete tools

Mechanical hard drives often leave deleted clusters untouched until something else claims them. Many SSDs, by contrast, receive TRIM commands from the OS that mark freed blocks for background erasure. That can shrink the window where classic file-carving succeeds.

Recuva remains valuable - especially on external SSDs, older volumes, or situations where TRIM was delayed - but strong odds correlate with acting quickly and minimizing writes. For mission-critical loss on NVMe, pair software recovery with professional or forensic workflows when the data justifies the cost.

External SSDs on USB often behave differently from internal NVMe: TRIM may be disabled or delayed by the bridge chip. That can extend recoverability compared with a laptop system disk. Document enclosure model and USB port (3.x vs 2.0) when results look inconsistent between machines.
